Ontario G1 test — frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the Ontario G1 test, and what is the pass mark?
The G1 knowledge test has 40 multiple-choice questions in two parts: 20 on road signs and 20 on the rules of the road. You need at least 16 out of 20 (80%) on each part. If you pass one part and fail the other, you only rewrite the part you failed. This practice test uses the same 40-question, two-part format.
Is this the official MTO G1 test?
No. This is a free, unofficial practice test based on the Ontario MTO Driver's Handbook. The real knowledge test is written at a DriveTest centre and its questions may differ, so study the official handbook as well as practising here.
What do I need to bring to write my G1?
You must be at least 16. Bring original ID that proves your legal name, date of birth and signature (a passport covers most of it; a birth certificate needs a second signed card), plus your glasses or contacts if you wear them, because you take a vision test before the knowledge test.
Where do I take the G1 test, and do I need an appointment?
You write it at a DriveTest centre, such as Downsview, Metro East or Etobicoke in Toronto, Walkley or Canotek in Ottawa, Longside in Mississauga, or the Hamilton and Kingston centres. The knowledge test is walk-in, so no booking is needed; arrive early, and check the centre's hours before you go.
What happens if I fail the G1 test?
You can retake it. There is a fee each time you rewrite, so it is worth practising until you are passing both sections comfortably before you go.
What can I do once I have my G1?
You can practise driving with a fully licensed driver beside you in the front passenger seat: they need at least four years of driving experience and a blood alcohol level under 0.05%. Your own blood alcohol must be zero, and there are limits on highway and late-night driving. You normally wait 12 months before your G2 road test, or 8 months if you complete an MTO-approved Beginner Driver Education (BDE) course.
Can I start a BDE course before I get my G1?
Yes. You can begin the BDE theory portion before you have your G1; you need a valid G1 to start the in-car lessons.
