Driving after dark presents unique challenges for beginner drivers. Reduced visibility, glare from oncoming LED headlights, altered depth perception, and increased wildlife activity make nighttime driving significantly more demanding than daytime travel. In Ontario, autumn and winter bring shorter daylight hours, making night driving skills essential for every new driver.
Mastering core night driving tips helps beginner drivers maintain safe, confident control on dark urban and rural roads.

1. Proper Headlight and High-Beam Usage
Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, drivers must turn on vehicle headlights one-half hour before sunset until one-half hour after sunrise, and whenever visibility is reduced to less than 150 meters.
When to Dim High Beams: Switch from high beams to low beams within 150 meters of oncoming vehicles, and within 60 meters when following behind another vehicle.
2. Managing Headlight Glare
When oncoming vehicles approach with bright headlights, do not stare directly at their lights. Instead, shift your visual focus down toward the right-hand edge of your travel lane to maintain steering alignment while preserving your night vision.
3. Avoid "Overdriving" Your Headlights
Overdriving your headlights occurs when your stopping distance exceeds the illuminated area ahead. Standard low-beam headlights illuminate roughly 30 to 45 meters ahead. Maintain a speed that allows you to stop safely within the visible distance illuminated by your lights.
G2 Passenger Restrictions After Midnight
If you hold a G2 license and are under 19 years of age, specific statutory restrictions apply to nighttime driving:
First 6 Months of G2: You may carry only one passenger under 20 years of age between midnight and 5:00 a.m.
After 6 Months of G2: You may carry up to three passengers under 20 years of age between midnight and 5:00 a.m.
Exemptions: These restrictions do not apply if accompanied by a fully licensed driver (with 4+ years of experience) in the front seat or if passengers are immediate family members.
